This group of sculpture chosen for the Marsden Woo virtual showroom reflects my interest in the simplified figure, the body in a fragmented and whole state, and the use of materials and process to convey states of liveliness, excitement, emptiness, deadness and neutrality.
–Emma Woffenden
Emma Woffenden employs a full range of complex glass and mixed media techniques to make works that explore the power of myth and archetypes. The influences of social structures and the dynamics of power relations on the individual imbue her sculpture with a palpable sense of internal conflict. Her uncanny forms trespass upon the viewer’s imagination, casting an oblique light on the human condition.
Woffenden's work has evolved with glassmaking at the centre, using transferable skills and ‘glass shapes’ as a developing language of form. She has also exhibited drawings, photographs and short films. As well as her studio practice, she has collaborated with her partner designer Tord Boontje and in 2016 completed a three year appointment as the Artistic Director of North Lands Glass in Scotland.
Widely recognised as one of Britain's leading glass artists, her work is included in over 25 international public collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Wellcome Trust and the Crafts Council, London and Ernsting Glass Museum, Germany. Her award-winning designs for Transglass can be found in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and she was a finalist in the Women's Hour Craft Prize 2017-18. In 2016 Woffenden was awarded research funding from Creative Scotland to explore Live in Your Hands, a three way art project involving a glassmaker, choreographer and film maker. In 2018 Arts Council of England supported the collaboration further resulting in a work titled Fell.
