During the past months Radstone has returned to hessian scrim as begetter of form. The contradiction of a flexible organic material turning into a brittle skeleton, made permanent through burning – sealing its identity in time, transforming it to ceramic – resonates with the heightened sense of fragility exposed over and over again in an unnatural year. Clay, newsprint, tissue paper, textile, nails and wire; a fleeting moment fashioned from discarded scraps and fragments, the mundane debris of material and memory, fused with shreds of colour along a continuing journey from weight to lightness.
For the artist, working on paper has become increasingly important through the somewhat unfocused days of lockdown. Looking for methods that can draw on the unconscious and bypass laboured intent, these have become equivalents to three dimensional works and like them are explorations that point towards large scale sculptures.
